Capital Project Overview
The North Greece Fire District has embarked on a comprehensive capital project to enhance its operational capabilities and service delivery to the community. This initiative involves constructing a new, state-of-the-art firehouse to replace the existing Station 3, located at 2030 English Rd, just 0.3 miles down the road. The new fire station will be a two-story building, spanning approximately 16,000 square feet in total, with a ground footprint of 12,000 square feet. This development marks a significant advancement in the district's ongoing commitment to providing exceptional emergency services.History of the Current Fire Station
Station 3, constructed in the 1980s, was originally established as a satellite station for volunteer responders. Over the years, it has transitioned to accommodate four full-time career staff members who are housed at the station around the clock. This evolution from a volunteer outpost to a critical hub for professional firefighting and emergency response underscores the station's vital role within the community and the growing needs that have accompanied its operational shifts.
Needs Addressed by the New Fire Station
The current facility at Station 3 faces several infrastructure and capacity challenges that impede its effectiveness and safety. These issues include a deteriorating roof, damaged and non-functional floor drains in the apparatus bay, regular clogs in the sewer drains, and structural problems with the floors. Additionally, the lack of adequate living quarters for female firefighters has highlighted the need for a more inclusive and accommodating facility. The construction of a new fire station will address these issues, improve living and working conditions for all staff, and enable the strategic centralization of the Battalion Chief within the district, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and response capabilities.
Alternative Considerations
During the planning process, the district explored several alternative sites, actively seeking properties that could meet the strategic and operational requirements of a new fire station. Despite making offers on two potential properties, no viable solutions were found that matched the affordability and optimal response coverage provided by the existing site at 2030 English Rd. Consequently, the district initially planned to demolish and rebuild Station 3 on its current site. However, just before implementation, a new property became available, which the district successfully acquired. This new site allows the existing firehouse to remain operational during construction and offers much-needed additional space.
Financial Strategy
The projected total cost for this ambitious project is $13.8 million. To finance the construction, the district will utilize $600,000 from its operating budget, with the remaining $13.2 million to be raised through the issuance of a bond. Registered Voters that are residents in the North Greece Fire District are invited to vote on this bond resolution at a special election on Tuesday, September 17 at HQ (1766 Latta Rd) from 6:00pm-9:00pm. This 15-year bond is expected to impose an additional tax burden of approximately 28 cents per thousand dollars of full property value on district homeowners.
The new fire station project represents a significant investment in the future of the North Greece Fire District, aiming to provide a state-of-the-art facility that meets the current and future needs of the community it serves. Through careful planning, consideration of alternatives, and a transparent financial strategy, the district is poised to enhance its emergency response capabilities significantly, ensuring the safety and well-being of both its personnel and the public.
