Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled and reliable vehicle mechanic to join our Fire District team. This position is responsible for the overall maintenance, repair, and readiness of all Fire District vehicles and apparatus. This position will report directly to the Fire Chief or their designee.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance on all Fire District vehicles and apparatus per recommended schedules.
  • Perform emergency repairs on all apparatus, including callback emergency road service.
  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities and schedules.
  • Conduct repairs across systems including engine, transmission, electrical, drivetrain, brakes, steering, aerial systems, and fire pumps.
  • Test and troubleshoot mechanical and system issues as needed.
  • Maintain inventory levels of parts and supplies; track usage and reorder as needed.
  • Coordinate and schedule all outsourced repairs; work directly with vendors and external repair services when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Fire Chief or their designee.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 2 years of full-time or its part-time equivalent paid experience in mechanical work on fire apparatus, or
  • 5 years of full-time paid or its part time equivalent experience as a heavy equipment mechanic, or

equivalent combination of the above experience

  • Valid New York State Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

 

Preferred Skills & Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of automotive and diagnostic testing equipment.
  • Experience working with fire apparatus, fire pumps, and aerial systems.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and maintain detailed service records.
  • Comfortable working independently and making decisions under pressure.

Pay and Benefits

Competitive salary based on experience; range $80,000 - $88,000 annually, plus an excellent benefit package and New York State Retirement.
